Pauline Trigere Birds of Paradise Brocade Evening Gown & Wool Cape
This stunning ensemble from Pauline Trigère’s Fall 1972 collection is a metallic brocade strapless evening gown and coordinating double-faced wool cape. According to the fashion library at Kent State University, where PaulineTrigère's records are archived, the cape is style #398, titled as "Ankle-length Cape Kingfisher Double face”, and the dress is style #399 and notated as “Birds of Paradise Brocade”. The cape is also pictured in the book American Fashion and was intended to be worn with either the dress with which it is pictured in the book or with the Birds of Paradise metallic brocade gown here.
The strapless gown is elegant and sophisticated. Trigère was known for her structured garments that were never fussy or frilly and this gown is no exception. It is masterfully constructed . The bodice features a fold over detail around the top that is meant to loop or tie in the back. It could just as easily be worn with a jeweled brooch. Closure with center back zipper. Inside you will find a Designer Collection by Formfit bustier that is also labeled as designed by Pauline Trigère. It is sewn into the bodice and appears to be original rather than an addition as the silk used to bind the top edge and attach it to the dress matches the bodice lining. Attached at the waistline are softly gathered hip panniers to aide the drape of the dress.
The cape is simply styled, another example of Trigère's masterful cutting. It is reminiscent of the box capes of the 1940's with somewhat fitted shoulder and straight lines. The front tie is looped through openings in the front yoke seam.
The condition of the dress is excellent. Free from rips, holes, stains and odors. The cape does have several tiny moth nips on the back and at the hemline that are noticeable only on close inspection. There is also a moth nip at the neckline on the front left. While it is more noticeable it can be easily overlooked and does not detract at all.
