Paris Couture Evening Coat
Dating to the 1920s, this exquisite, French couture evening coat of black silk faille is ornamented with gold and silver metallic passementerie in an ornate bird and vine pattern. The vines meander around the collar and outline the front opening, hemline and sleeves. Fully lined in metallic gold lame. The label attached at the underarm reads, Eliette, 16, Rue De La Pepiniere, Paris, Couture, Fourrure. As yet, we have not found information regarding this maker but there is no doubt in studying this coat that it is from a very fine couture house that would have been on a level with others of the day such as Chanel, Paquin, Lanvin and Poiret among others.
There is no closure as the wrap was made to wear open. Seven vertical darts at the back of the neckline provide shaping and add a slight fullness in the back.
In wonderful condition, there are areas of the silver metallic cord that have tarnished which add to the pattern rather than detracting. The lining has the very slightest of wear at the neckline but again, nothing that takes away from the beauty of value of the piece. Truly a stunning item!
