1950s New Look Coat by Hattie Carnegie
Dating to the early 1950s this Carnegie Blue, new look coat would have been at the height of fashion when it was made. The fabric is a bit of a mystery. It is likely a wool and silk blend with perhaps some linen and is a medium weight with a slightly rough hand to it. I have seen this type of fabric referred to as alpaca but I just can't be sure what the fiber content is without further testing.
Regardless of the fiber content, this coat is quite becoming with its nipped in waist and fitted bodice over a full skirt. There are two Carnegie labels sewn into the lining, one at the neckline and one at the right side seam. Peter Pan collar and four button front closure and two flap pockets. Fully lined with back vent.
Overall condition is very good however there is one small crescent shaped hole in the fabric on the left front just above knee height. This could easily be lined with fabric from a seam allowance. There are also some slight scattered spots that though faint are visible in some light. We have not attempted cleaning as we prefer to present items in as found, original condition. This coat is still quite presentable and a wonderful example of Hattie Carnegie designs as well as new look fashion.
