1910 First Edition The Slant Book by Peter Newell

This first edition of Peter Newell's Slant Book is in poor to fair condition but still complete and a rare book. Newell, (1862 - 1929) created several novelty books and was one of the earliest American illustrators to work in half-tone washes as in this book.

A hardcover with yellow illustrated paper-covered boards and navy buckram binding on the spine. Edges of cover are worn through to the boards. Text pages are all present, but most are loose from the binding. Pages are soiled from dirty little fingers and owners name is present in several places. The right pages feature charming illustrations that accompany the rhyme telling the story of Bobby whose "go-cart" gets away from the nurse on a hill. NY: Harper & Bros., 1910.

It starts:

Where Bobby lives there is a hill -
A hill so steep and high,
'Twould fill the bill for Jack and Jill
Their famous act to try

Once Bobby's Go-cart broke away
And down this hill it kited.
The careless Nurse screamed in dismay
But Bobby was delighted.

The book concludes when Bobby's wild ride ends with him in the hay. You'll have to read the tale for yourself though.
