1790s Silk Evening Shoes Slippers
It is rare to find 18th century shoes made of silk, such as these delicate pink silk slippers. Shoes of silk were not made for outdoor wear but for special occasions such as dances and fancy balls. Typical of the period the side and back seams as well as the top edge are bound in matching silk tape. The embroidery on the toes is worked in fine silver toned metallic thread with gold toned sequins and wider metal strips woven in a basket weave pattern filling the larger central area. This type of embroidery would have been another indication of a special occasion shoe.
This pair measures 9.5" long with the length from throat to toe measuring 3.75". They feature a spring heel showing little to no wear on the soles. The silk is supple and free from splits or shattering. There is some very light age discoloration and/or fading but nothing that detracts from these outstanding, museum quality shoes!
